There are big advantages to going self-employed such as having more control over your time and work. But with the fast-paced lifestyle, most of us have today, experiencing stress from time-to-time is a normal part of life. So it doesn’t hurt to incorporate some self-care habits into your day-to-day routine to help you avoid unnecessary stress altogether.

Clear up your workspace

If you look at your desk right now, is it cluttered with papers, folders and notebooks that you haven’t even looked at it in six months? Take some time to clear out your workspace, as it’s proven to help give you mental clarity. An environment and workspace can have a significant impact on productivity and wellbeing, so make your workspace somewhere that inspires you. You could put up pictures, mementoes that remind you of what matters most and maybe even a plant pot. In fact, studies have shown that plants in a workspace have resulted in the decline of feelings such as anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Additionally, a study done by Exeter University in 2014, reported that plants in a workspace increased productivity by 15%.

Make a to-do list

It might sound simple but taking a few minutes to note down the key things you want to achieve for the day can help optimise your productivity. Once you have it all spelt out (literally), it’s likely the tasks will feel entirely more manageable than they did in the abstract. What’s more, this habit allows you to prioritise tasks, and avoid getting bogged down by smaller, less urgent tasks that might pop up.

Celebrate your victories

Once a big project has been completed, most of us are already onto the next task, without really acknowledging what we have just achieved. So take a moment to recognise your accomplishments. You might even want to spend some time noting down what went well or what you were particularly happy with. This kind of self-evaluation is a great habit to adopt for self-care as you are allowing yourself to pause for a moment and appreciate what you’ve done. This helps maintain your passion for your work, which is valuable to transfer onto your next project.

Be sure to make time to switch off

Set boundaries between work and home life, and learn to turn off your emails once the working day is done. It’s easy to want to keep working – particularly when self-employed – after all you are working for yourself. But managing a healthy work-life balance is essential for the long-term. Getting the proper rest allows you to recharge and avoid a burnout.

If you struggle to take time out for yourself, designate a time where you will spend doing something you enjoy that isn’t related to work. It can be anything; maybe doing a little gardening, going shopping, taking a short trip or even getting that haircut you’re desperately in need of. Any time you take for yourself is vital to your self-care, no matter how small it may seem. Don’t forget with our rewards scheme, Kingsley Hamilton Lifestyle, you can save money on everything from health, beauty, entertainment, and travel to retail, home, garden and office essentials.

Self-care with Kingsley Hamilton LifestyleSocialise

Healthy and supportive relationships are a critical part of self-care. Humans are social beings and so having a circle of friends and family is important for your health and happiness. But as a contractor, it’s easy to get lost in your work. So make an effort to take time out of your busy schedule to build and maintain your social life.

Get a workout done

It cannot be said enough; exercise is great for not just your physical wellbeing but your mental health too! Exercise releases happy hormones in your brain, like Serotonin. So try to get a regular workout in, even if it’s opting to walk somewhere rather than driving or taking the bus. It’ll help boost your mood and improve your focus as a whole.
